SHERIFFS: Provides relative to premium costs for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs of
the Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office
1 AN ACT
2To enact 13:5554(LL), relative to the Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office; to provide for the
3 payment of insurance premium costs; to provide for eligibility requirements for the
4 payment of insurance premium costs for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs of the
5 Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office; and to provide for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 13:5554(LL) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
8 ยง5554. Group insurance; kinds; amounts; subrogation
9 * * *
10 LL. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section, the
11 sheriff of Catahoula Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the premium
12 costs of group insurance for any retired sheriff and any retired deputy sheriff who
13 retired from the Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office as follows:
14 (1) One hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical,
15 medical expense, and dental insurance, and the first ten thousand dollars of life
16 insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section if the sheriff or deputy
17 sheriff retired with thirty years or more of creditable service with the sheriff's office
18 of Catahoula Parish.
19 (2) Seventy-five percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical,
20 medical expense, and dental insurance, and the first ten thousand dollars of life
21 insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section if the sheriff or deputy

1 sheriff retired with twenty-five years of creditable service with the sheriff's office of
2 Catahoula Parish.
3 (3) Fifty percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical
4 expense, and dental insurance, and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance
5 contracted for under the provisions of this Section if the sheriff or deputy sheriff
6 retired with twenty years of creditable service with the sheriff's office of Catahoula
7 Parish.
8 (4) The provisions of this Subsection shall apply only to persons hired by the
9 Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office on or after July 1, 2020, and who subsequently
10 retire from the Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office.

Abstract: Requires the Catahoula Parish Sheriff to pay 100%, 75%, or 50% of group
insurance premiums for particular retirees hired on or after July 1, 2020.
Present law authorizes the sheriff of each parish to pay for the insurance premiums of the
sheriff, sheriff deputies, and dependents of the sheriff and sheriff deputies. The sheriff may
contract with any insurance company authorized to do business in this state for group life
and accidental death and dismemberment, group health, accident, dental, hospital, surgical,
or other medical expense and group disability insurance.
Present law authorizes the sheriff of certain parishes, including Catahoula, to pay these
premiums in full for their retirees.
Proposed law retains present law for those retirees hired prior to July 1, 2020, and requires
that the sheriff of Catahoula Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the premium
costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and dental insurance, and the first ten
thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section for any
retired sheriff and any retired deputy sheriff who retired from the Catahoula Parish Sheriff's
Office hired on or after July 1, 2020, as follows:
(1)100% with 30 years or more of creditable service with the sheriff's office of
Catahoula Parish.
(2)75% with 25 years of creditable service with the sheriff's office of Catahoula Parish.
(3)50% with 20 years of creditable service with the sheriff's office of Catahoula Parish.
