HOUSE BILL NO. 782

RETIREMENT/TEACHERS:  Provides relative to the return to work of retired certified
classroom teachers
1	AN ACT
2To enact R.S. 11:710.1, relative to retired teachers in the Teachers' Retirement System of
3 Louisiana; to provide relative to the retirement benefits of a retired teacher who
4 returns to work and is compensated on a per-day basis; to provide relative to
5 contributions and service credit; and to provide for related matters.
6	Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published
7	as provided by Article X, Section 29(C) of the Constitution
8	of Louisiana.
9Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
10 Section 1.  R.S. 11:710.1 is hereby enacted to read as follows:
11 ยง710.1.  Reemployment of certified teachers compensated on a per-day basis
12	Notwithstanding the provisions of this Chapter, a retired certified teacher
13 who returns to work as a certified teacher and who is compensated solely on a per-
14 day basis shall not have his benefit suspended or reduced for the duration of his
15 reemployment under such terms.  The retiree and his employer shall not make
16 contributions to the system during such time, and he shall receive no additional
17 service credit and shall not accrue any additional retirement benefits.

Abstract:  Allows retired certified teachers who are members of the Teachers' Retirement
System of La. (TRSL) to return to work that is compensated on a per-day basis
without a suspension of benefits.
Present law provides for the reemployment eligibility of retired members of TRSL. 
Generally requires the suspension of retirement benefits of a retired teacher who returns to
work as a teacher.  Provides relative to reemployment in other positions and under certain
shortage conditions.
Proposed law provides that a retired certified teacher who is reemployed as a certified
teacher and who is compensated on a per-day basis shall not have his retirement benefit
suspended or reduced.  Provides that the retiree and his employer shall not make
contributions to the system during such time, and he shall receive no additional service credit
and shall not accrue any additional retirement benefits.
