HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 48
BY REPRESENTATIVES MARINO, CORMIER, GREEN, HENRY, HILFERTY, ILLG,
KERNER, LYONS, GREGORY MILLER, STAGNI, THOMAS, AND VILLIO
CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences on the death of the Honorable Henry Garland
Sullivan, Jr.
1	A RESOLUTION
2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death, on Sunday,
3 May 17, 2020, of the Honorable Henry Garland Sullivan, Jr. of New Orleans,
4 Louisiana.
5 WHEREAS, the Honorable Henry Garland Sullivan, Jr. was born on September 4,
61947, in New Orleans; he graduated from De La Salle High School in New Orleans in 1965,
7completed a bachelor of science degree at Southeastern Louisiana University in 1969, and
8received his juris doctorate degree from Loyola Law School in 1974; and
9 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan's legal career began with twenty-two years in private
10practice; during that time, he also served as an assistant parish attorney for Jefferson Parish,
11as a legal advisor to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and as an assistant district attorney
12in Jefferson Parish; and
13 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan's legal service to the community did not go
14unrecognized, and in 1996, he was elected as a judge to the Louisiana 24th Judicial District
15Court; in 2008, he was appointed as Chief Judge of the 24th Judicial District Court; and
16 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan was highly involved throughout his professional life; he
17was a member of many associations, including the Jefferson Bar Association, the American
18Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Louisiana Fourth and Fifth Circuit
19Judges Association, of which he served as president, and many others; he was also a fellow
20of the Louisiana Bar Foundation; and

1 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan resided on the West Bank throughout his life, and his
2love for that community was evidenced by his extensive civic involvement in the Gretna and
3Jefferson historical societies, the West Bank Rotary Club, and various other social
4organizations; and
5 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan was also honored in 2005 as the "Grand Marshal" of the
6Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day Club; and
7 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan is survived by his loving wife, Judy Jambon Sullivan;
8his children Kathleen Sullivan Couvillion, and her husband Kevin; Lauren Sullivan
9Havrylkoff, and her husband David; Alicia Hindelang Austin, and her husband Chad; and
10Henry Garland Sullivan III, and his wife Monique; and his seven grandchildren; he was a
11true servant of the people, compassionate and civic minded, and he will be deeply missed
12be all who knew and loved him.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express deepest condolences on the passing of the
15Honorable Henry Garland Sullivan, Jr.; does hereby offer appreciation for Judge Sullivan's
16commitment to and service of his community and to all of Louisiana; and does hereby
17extend sincere hopes and wishes for his family's comfort during its time of loss.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
19family of the Honorable Henry Garland Sullivan, Jr.
