RÉSUMÉ DIGEST ACT 220 (SB 183) 2020 Regular Session Harris Prior law prohibited law enforcement officers from being stationed at polling places on election day, with the exception when the commissioners summon law enforcement officers to assist them. New law retains prior law and provides that the clerk of court may summon law enforcement officers to assist them at polling places. New law further provides for law enforcement officers to enter a polling place when there is reasonable belief there is an emergency and the commissioners are unable to summon the law enforcement officers. Prior law provided that the registrar may use law enforcement officers to maintain order at any location where early voting is conducted. New law retains prior law and allows law enforcement officers to enter the early voting location when there is a reasonable belief there is an emergency and the registrar is unable to summon the law enforcement officers. Effective upon signature of the governor (June 11, 2020). (Amends R.S. 18:428(A) and (F); adds R.S. 18:428(G) and 1309(A)(5))
