SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 9
BY SENATOR FOIL 
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH.  Designates March 2020 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness
month in Louisiana and commends Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center
on the achievement of attaining the designation of National Accreditation Program for Rectal
Cancer.
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To designate March 2020 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Louisiana and to
3 commend Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center on the
4 achievement of the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC).
5 WHEREAS, in 2020, it is estimated that 104,610 individuals in the United States will
6 be diagnosed with colon cancer and another 43,340 will be diagnosed with rectal cancer; and
7 WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in
8 men and women combined in the United States with an expected 53,200 deaths in 2020; and
9 WHEREAS, there are now more than one million survivors of colorectal cancer in
10 the United States; and
11 WHEREAS, while there is no sure way to prevent colorectal cancer, there are
12 numerous things an individual can do to reduce their risk; and
13 WHEREAS, colorectal cancer screening is the most impactful way to reduce an
14 individual's risk of colorectal cancer as well as maintaining a healthy weight, increasing the
15 amount of physical activity, limiting intake of red and processed meats, and eating more
16 fruits and vegetables may also lower an individual's risk; and
17 WHEREAS, public awareness and educational campaigns on colorectal cancer
18 prevention, screening, and symptoms are held during the month of March each year; and

1 WHEREAS, the goal of the Commission on Cancer National Accreditation Program
2 for Rectal Cancer is to ensure patients with rectal cancer receive appropriate care using a
3 multidisciplinary approach with a team of specialists reviewing every patient's care; and
4 WHEREAS, there are currently only fifteen such programs in the United States and
5 Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center is the only cancer center in the
6 state of Louisiana to achieve this prestigious accreditation.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
8 designate March 2020 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Louisiana and does hereby
9 commend Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center on the achievement of
10 the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC).
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
12 to the leadership of the Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center.
