A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To designate March 2020 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Louisiana and to
commend Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center on the
achievement of the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC).
WHEREAS, in 2020, it is estimated that 104,610 individuals in the United States will
be diagnosed with colon cancer and another 43,340 will be diagnosed with rectal cancer; and
WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in
men and women combined in the United States with an expected 53,200 deaths in 2020; and
WHEREAS, there are now more than one million survivors of colorectal cancer in
the United States; and
WHEREAS, while there is no sure way to prevent colorectal cancer, there are
numerous things an individual can do to reduce their risk; and
WHEREAS, colorectal cancer screening is the most impactful way to reduce an
individual's risk of colorectal cancer as well as maintaining a healthy weight, increasing the
amount of physical activity, limiting intake of red and processed meats, and eating more
fruits and vegetables may also lower an individual's risk; and
WHEREAS, public awareness and educational campaigns on colorectal cancer
prevention, screening, and symptoms are held during the month of March each year; and
WHEREAS, the goal of the Commission on Cancer National Accreditation Program
for Rectal Cancer is to ensure patients with rectal cancer receive appropriate care using a
multidisciplinary approach with a team of specialists reviewing every patient's care; and
WHEREAS, there are currently only fifteen such programs in the United States and
Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center is the only cancer center in the
state of Louisiana to achieve this prestigious accreditation.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
designate March 2020 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Louisiana and does hereby
commend Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center on the achievement of
the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC).
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
leadership of the Mary Bird Perkins - Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center.
