Commends Elizabeth Drennan on being named a Distinguished Finalist in Louisiana for the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend Elizabeth Drennan, a junior at Louise S. McGehee School, on being named a 3 Distinguished Finalist for the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, 4 designating her as one of the top youth volunteers in Louisiana for 2020. 5 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Drennan, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was 6 nominated for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, which is the largest youth 7 recognition program based solely on volunteer service in the United States; and 8 WHEREAS, Ms. Drennan is a student leader of Hearts of Passion, an organization 9 that offers a week-long summer camp experience to teenagers suffering with cancer; and 10 WHEREAS, in her volunteer capacity with Hearts of Passion, Elizabeth Drennan has 11 helped plan fundraising events, assisted in establishing partnerships with local businesses, 12 and identified prospective participants; and 13 WHEREAS, Ms. Drennan also helped facilitate the camp events, which included a 14 breakfast at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, a steamboat party on the Mississippi 15 River, and a scavenger hunt through the French Quarter; and 16 WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are given in partnership 17 with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and are designed 18 to emphasize the importance the nation places on service to others and encouraging all Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 17 SLS 20RS-676 ORIGINAL 1 young Americans to contribute to their communities; and 2 WHEREAS, the NASSP was established in 1916 with the aim of promoting 3 excellence in school leadership at the middle and high school levels; its activities focus on 4 providing resources and professional development programs for the entire school leadership 5 team, serving its 27,000 members in the U.S. and forty-four other countries; and 6 WHEREAS, Prudential is celebrating its twenty-fifth year of involvement with these 7 unique awards, encouraging volunteer involvement among American teenagers and 8 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Financial, Inc., Charles Lowrey, 9 reflected that, "We are as inspired as ever by the work students are doing to address the 10 needs of a changing world"; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Lowery went on to say that, "We hope that their resolve, their 12 initiative, and their perspectives on society's challenges move others to consider how they 13 can make a difference, too"; and 14 WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are open to nominations 15 from all public and private middle and high schools in the country, as well as Girl Scout 16 councils, 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and Points of Light 17 Global Network member organizations; and 18 WHEREAS, Elizabeth Drennan is an inspiring example to her fellow students and 19 her influence will resonate with those students and adults who are considering involvement 20 in their community as a hands-on participant in making their communities serve all those 21 living there and bringing to life the American dream and its commitment to volunteerism 22 and community activism. 23 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 24 does hereby commend Elizabeth Drennan, a junior at Louise S. McGehee School, on being 25 named a Distinguished Finalist for the 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, 26 designating her as one of the top youth volunteers in Louisiana for 2020. 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 28 Elizabeth Drennan, at Louise S. McGehee School in New Orleans, Louisiana.
