Recognizes May 15, 2020, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and May 10-16, 2020 as Police Week. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To recognize Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week. 3 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the brave men and women of our law 4 enforcement community for continually summoning the courage to fulfill their solemn oath 5 to protect and serve; and 6 WHEREAS, we pause to remember all those who have lost their lives and who have 7 suffered permanent disabilities defending their communities and the rule of law, including 8 the heroes we have lost this year to the coronavirus; and 9 WHEREAS, throughout our state's and nation's history, law enforcement officials 10 have never wavered in the face of crisis or tragedy as during uncertain times, law 11 enforcement officers bravely face challenges and continue to protect the American people; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, they steadfastly ensure the safety of our communities, providing a much 14 needed sense of security for our citizens, and our state and country is extremely grateful for 15 their efforts; and 16 WHEREAS, we are committed to ensuring our nation's federal, state, local, and tribal 17 law enforcement officers have the resources and support they need to perform their duties 18 safely and effectively; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 43 SLS 20RS-1478 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, we must continue working toward a time when all people respect and 2 understand the important work that law enforcement officers do, unfortunately, our law 3 enforcement officers do not always receive the respect they deserve, as these brave men and 4 women operate in an environment where their moral and legal authority is constantly being 5 scrutinized, and they undertake the critical, yet difficult, task of addressing the actions of 6 those affected by addiction, homelessness, and mental illness; and 7 WHEREAS, their ability to work well in the face of these and other challenges is 8 extraordinary and we have incredible appreciation for their public service and selflessness; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, on behalf of the state and nation, we proudly recognize the more than 11 900,000 sworn members of law enforcement for their resolve and dedication in the face of 12 dangerous uncertainty; and 13 WHEREAS, the thoughts and prayers of our state and nation are with them and their 14 families, and we will always owe them our appreciation and support; and 15 WHEREAS, by a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (Public 16 Law 87-726, 76 Stat. 676), and by Section 1 of Public Law 105-225 (36 U.S.C. 136-137), 17 the president of the United States has been authorized and requested to designate May 15 of 18 each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls as "Police 19 Week"; and 20 WHEREAS, the president has proclaimed May 15, 2020, as Peace Officers Memorial 21 Day and May 10 through May 16, 2020, as Police Week. 22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 23 does hereby recognize May 15, 2020, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 10 through 24 May 16, 2020, as Police Week. 25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Louisiana's citizens are urged and requested to 26 observe Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and 27 activities.
