Expresses condolences upon the death of former judge Henry Garland Sullivan Jr. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the 3 death of the Honorable Henry Garland Sullivan Jr. 4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the 5 Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of former judge Henry 6 Garland Sullivan Jr. on May 17, 2020, at the age of seventy-two; and 7 WHEREAS, he was born on September 4, 1947, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son 8 of Doris LeBlanc Sullivan and the late Henry Garland Sullivan Sr.; and 9 WHEREAS, Henry Sullivan graduated from De La Salle High School in New 10 Orleans in 1965 and earned a Bachelor of Science from Southeastern Louisiana University 11 in 1969; and 12 WHEREAS, he received his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School in 1974 13 and began his legal career in private practice which continued for twenty-two years; and 14 WHEREAS, Henry Sullivan also served as an Assistant Parish Attorney for the 15 Parish of Jefferson, as legal advisor to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and as an 16 Assistant District Attorney for the parish of Jefferson; and 17 WHEREAS, in 1996, he was elected as judge to the Louisiana 24th Judicial District 18 Court "Division M" and his twenty-four year tenure on the bench included his appointment Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 54 SLS 20RS-1702 ORIGINAL 1 as Chief Judge in 2008; and 2 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan was a conservative jurist who handed down tough 3 sentences, but he was known for his relaxed, cordial, and respectful judicial temperament; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, his professional associations included the American Bar Association, 6 the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Louisiana Fourth and Fifth Circuit Judges 7 Association where he served as President, The John C. Boutall American Inn of Court, the 8 Louisiana District Judges Association, the Jefferson Bar Association, the National Judicial 9 College Alumni, and a fellow of the Louisiana Bar Foundation; and 10 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan was a lifelong resident of the West Bank, and his love 11 for his neighborhood and community showed in his long list of civic involvement, which 12 included the Gretna Community Association, the Gretna Historical Society, the Jefferson 13 Historical Society of Louisiana, the West Bank Rotary Club, Rotary International, Ancient 14 Order of Hibernians, Forty Niners, the St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers Association, and 15 Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day Club of which he was truly honored to be selected as the 16 2005 "Grand Marshall"; and 17 WHEREAS, he is survived by his loving wife of thirty-two years, Judy Jambon 18 Sullivan; his children, Kathleen Sullivan Couvillion (Kevin), Lauren Sullivan Havrylkoff 19 (David), Alicia Hindelang Austin (Chad), and Henry Garland Sullivan III (Monique); 20 grandchildren whom he loved and adored, Evan Michael Schiavi, Sean Patrick Sullivan, 21 Michael James Tebbe II, Christopher Henry Tebbe, Morgan Sullivan Tebbe, Mason Jude 22 Austin, Davis Hartford Austin; and many loving step-great-grandchildren; and 23 WHEREAS, Judge Sullivan was universally loved and respected by all who knew 24 him, he was an exemplary judge, a wonderful husband, son, father, grandfather, colleague, 25 and mentor, and a friend to many, and he will be greatly missed. 26 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 27 does hereby extend sincere condolences to the family of Judge Henry Garland Sullivan Jr. 28 upon the occasion of his death. 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 30 wife of Henry Garland Sullivan Jr., Judy Jambon Sullivan.
