SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 66

COMMENDATIONS.  Commends St. Mary's Lady Tigers on winning the Allstate Sugar
Bowl/LHSAA Division IV state basketball championship for 2020.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the St. Mary's of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Lady Tigers on winning the Allstate
3 Sugar Bowl/LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association) Division IV state
4 basketball championship.
5 WHEREAS, the St. Mary's Lady Tigers basketball team defeated rival Ouachita
6 Christian School in the championship game played in March 2020; and
7 WHEREAS, leading by twelve in the second half, the Lady Tigers held off a serious
8 rally by the Lady Eagles Of Ouachita Christian to claim the state championship by a score
9 of fifty-three to fifty; and
10 WHEREAS, Lady Tiger Maria Bienvenu was named the Most Valuable Player of
11 the championship game, as she led her team with fifteen first half points; she sank a shot in
12 the second half with approximately three and one half minutes left on the game clock, giving
13 the Lady Tigers their widest lead margin of the night, and she led all scorers in the game
14 with twenty-one points in the winning effort by the St. Mary's Lady Tigers; and
15 WHEREAS, the St. Mary's Lady Tigers were down to the Lady Eagles of Ouachita
16 Christian at halftime by a score of twenty-seven to twenty-one, but foul trouble struck in the
17 third quarter with three Lady Eagles earning their third foul each and St. Mary's capitalizing
18 on the foul trouble and, the Lady Eagles held their last lead of the game at thirty-two to

1 thirty-one, when the Lady Tigers scored on their next six possessions; and
2 WHEREAS, back-to-back three point shots by the Lady Tigers and a jumper from
3 the free throw line put St. Mary's ahead, thirty-eight to thirty-two, a lead the Lady Tigers
4 never relinquished; and
5 WHEREAS, prior to the game, Academic All-State plaques were presented to Emil
6 Maggio and Carissa Kautz of St. Mary's and Andi Grace Melton and Lauren Shanas of
7 Ouachita Christian, with only seniors and those with a minimum of a 4.0 grade point average
8 being eligible for the honor; and
9 WHEREAS, the St. Mary's Lady Tigers celebrated their upset win and storybook
10 ending to their dream season and they were proud to close out that season on a fifteen game
11 winning streak, claiming the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division IV basketball state
12 championship.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
14 does hereby commend the St. Mary's of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Lady Tigers on winning
15 the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association) Division IV
16 basketball state championship.
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
18 St. Mary's Lady Tigers basketball team.
