SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 66

A RESOLUTION
To commend the St. Mary's of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Lady Tigers on winning the Allstate
Sugar Bowl/LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association) Division IV state
basketball championship.
WHEREAS, the St. Mary's Lady Tigers basketball team defeated rival Ouachita
Christian School in the championship game played in March 2020; and
WHEREAS, leading by twelve in the second half, the Lady Tigers held off a serious
rally by the Lady Eagles of Ouachita Christian to claim the state championship by a score
of fifty-three to fifty; and
WHEREAS, Lady Tiger Maria Bienvenu was named the Most Valuable Player of
the championship game, as she led her team with fifteen first half points; she sank a shot in
the second half with approximately three and one half minutes left on the game clock, giving
the Lady Tigers their widest lead margin of the night, and she led all scorers in the game
with twenty-one points in the winning effort by the St. Mary's Lady Tigers; and
WHEREAS, the St. Mary's Lady Tigers were down to the Lady Eagles of Ouachita
Christian at halftime by a score of twenty-seven to twenty-one, but foul trouble struck in the
third quarter with three Lady Eagles earning their third foul each and St. Mary's capitalizing
on the foul trouble and, the Lady Eagles held their last lead of the game at thirty-two to
thirty-one, when the Lady Tigers scored on their next six possessions; and
WHEREAS, back-to-back three point shots by the Lady Tigers and a jumper from
the free throw line put St. Mary's ahead, thirty-eight to thirty-two, a lead the Lady Tigers
never relinquished; and
WHEREAS, prior to the game, Academic All-State plaques were presented to Emil
Maggio and Carissa Kautz of St. Mary's and Andi Grace Melton and Lauren Shanas of
Ouachita Christian, with only seniors and those with a minimum of a 4.0 grade point average
being eligible for the honor; and

WHEREAS, the St. Mary's Lady Tigers celebrated their upset win and storybook
ending to their dream season and they were proud to close out that season on a fifteen game
winning streak, claiming the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division IV basketball state
championship.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the St. Mary's of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Lady Tigers on winning
the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association) Division IV
basketball state championship.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
St. Mary's Lady Tigers basketball team.
