Expresses condolences upon the passing of former Louisiana State Senator Ron Landry. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of 3 Louisiana upon the passing of former Louisiana State Senator Ronald J. "Ron" 4 Landry. 5 WHEREAS, it is with sincere regret and profound sorrow that the members of the 6 Senate of the Louisiana Legislature have learned of the death of former Louisiana State 7 Senator Ronald J. "Ron" Landry on May 24, 2020, after an extended illness at age 8 seventy-six; and 9 WHEREAS, Senator Landry was a native of Thibodaux, and upon graduation from 10 the LSU Law Center, established a law practice and residence in LaPlace, Louisiana, where 11 he and his wife, Mary Ellen Landry Shiflett, raised their two children, Benton and Lauryn; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, Senator Landry was elected to the state senate, representing District 19 14 on his first ever run for political office in 1975; and 15 WHEREAS, he was subsequently re-elected five times, serving the citizens of 16 Louisiana for twenty-four years; and 17 WHEREAS, while serving as Senate parliamentarian, Senator Landry was known 18 as a stickler for Senate rules and he developed a reputation for fully reading all bills Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 67 SLS 20RS-2096 ORIGINAL 1 considered by the Senate; and 2 WHEREAS, Senator Landry was well known as a champion of the working man and 3 an especially strong advocate of commercial fishermen; and 4 WHEREAS, he also was successful in changing the way the state of Louisiana 5 treated handicapped students, including the hearing impaired, through numerous pieces of 6 legislation he authored; and 7 WHEREAS, Senator Landry developed an uncanny expertise in transportation 8 matters and public works projects as the longtime chairman of the Senate Committee on 9 Transportation, Highways and Public Works; and 10 WHEREAS, Senator Landry is survived by his son Benton Landry of North Carolina 11 and daughter Lauryn Landry Schenker and her husband Chris Schenker of Mandeville along 12 with three grandchildren Khalen Landry, Brooklyn Schenker, and Christian Schenker, as 13 well as siblings David Landry and his wife Laurie of Perdido Key, Forida, Dr. Barry Landry 14 and his wife Debbie of Thibodaux, and Alice Landry Champagne of Luling; and 15 WHEREAS, the passing of former Louisiana State Senator Ronald J. "Ron" Landry 16 has left a tremendous void in his community and has created a genuine sense of sorrow in 17 the many individuals who mourn his passing. 18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 19 does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the passing of former Louisiana 20 State Senator Ronald J. "Ron" Landry and does hereby extend posthumous honor and 21 recognition to Senator Landry for his legacy to his family, community, and the Louisiana 22 State Senate. 23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 24 family of former Louisiana State Senator Ronald J.
