HB 121 Reengrossed 2021 Regular Session	Seabaugh
Abstract: Authorizes the Shreveport police department to establish 12-hour shift cycles.
Present law provides that the maximum hours of work required of any full-time paid patrolman,
patrolman first class, sergeant, lieutenant, or captain, or any other employee of a municipal police
department, except those employed in a position, grade or class above that of captain, is 40 hours
per week except in cases of emergency.  Requires that for each overtime hour, the employee be paid
one and one-half times his usual salary.
Present law provides various exceptions for specific municipalities.
Present law provides that the present law does not apply to any employee of the city of Shreveport
police department in a position, grade, or class above lieutenant.  Proposed law repeals present law.
Proposed law provides an additional exception applicable to Shreveport.  Authorizes the Shreveport
police department to establish 12-hour work shift cycles for all employees except those in a position,
grade, or class above that of captain.  Requires that such employees be paid overtime at the rate of
one and one-half times their usual salary or be credited with compensatory time on a one and one-
half basis for all hours worked in shift cycle above 80.

system.
