JUDGES/DISTRICT: Provides relative to certain judgeships in the Twenty-First Judicial District 1 AN ACT 2To enact R.S. 13:621.21(C)(3), relative to judgeships in the Twenty-First Judicial District; 3 to provide for subject matter jurisdiction; to provide for compensation; and to 4 provide for related matters. 5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 6 Section 1. R.S. 13:621.21(C)(3) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7 ยง621.21. Twenty-First Judicial District 8 * * * 9 C.(1) 10 * * * 11 (3)(a) There is hereby recognized an additional district judgeship for the 12 Twenty-First Judicial District for the parishes of Livingston, St. Helena, and 13 Tangipahoa. The additional judge herein provided for and his successors shall 14 preside over Division I, which is hereby recognized for purposes of nomination and 15 election only. The additional judge and his successors shall be elected at large and 16 shall have jurisdiction throughout the district. The subject matter jurisdiction of 17 Division I is limited, under the provisions of Article V, Section 15(A) of the 18 Constitution of Louisiana, to juvenile matters, as provided by law, including cases Page 1 of 3 CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored are additions. HLS 21RS-508 ENGROSSED HB NO. 235 1 arising under the Children's Code of Louisiana, and under R.S. 46:236.1.120 et seq. 2 The additional judge and his successors shall receive the same compensation and 3 expense allowances, payable from the same sources and in the same manner, as are 4 now or may hereafter be provided for other judges of the district. 5 (b) The individual to be elected to the additional judgeship created by this 6 Act for the Twenty-First Judicial District shall be elected as provided by Article V, 7 Section 22 of the Constitution of Louisiana, and shall serve a term which shall begin 8 on January 1, 2009, and which shall expire at the same time as is provided by law for 9 the other judges of the court. Thereafter, the successors to the judge provided for in 10 this Act for the Twenty-First Judicial District shall be elected at the same time and 11 in the same manner and shall serve the same term as is now or may be provided 12 hereafter for other judges of the court. 13 (c) The provisions of this Act shall not reduce the term of office of any judge 14 of the Twenty-First Judicial District Court. 15 * * * 16 Section 2. This Act is intended only to codify Section 2 of Act 3 of the 2007 Regular 17Session and to retain all of the provisions of Section 1 of Act 3 of the 2007 Regular Session 18as enacted by the legislature during the 2007 Regular Session. Present law establishes a judgeship within the 21st Judicial District, Division I, which has subject matter jurisdiction limited to juvenile matters. Proposed law retains present law and codifies Section 2 of Act 3 of the 2007 R.S. while retaining Section 1 of Act 3 of the 2007 R.S.
