HLS 21RS-1216 ORIGINAL 2021 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 19 BY REPRESENTATIVE JAMES SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Thursday, April 29, 2021, as the thirty- seventh annual Red and White Day at the legislature 1 A RESOLUTION 2To recognize Thursday, April 29, 2021, as the thirty-seventh annual Red and White Day at 3 the legislature. 4 WHEREAS, the celebration of Red and White Day at the Legislature of Louisiana 5began in 1985 and has grown as a Louisiana tradition to become one observed by more than 6one thousand sorority and fraternity chapters throughout the country; a celebration is held 7annually at the nation's capitol; and 8 WHEREAS, Red and White Day is an activity of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 9Incorporated, which was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at 10Howard University who were eager to use their collective strength to promote academic 11excellence, to provide scholarship funding, to support those in need, to stimulate 12participation in the establishment of positive public policy, to highlight issues affecting 13minorities and women, and to find viable solutions to social problems; and 14 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, was incorporated in 1930 as 15a private, nonprofit organization; and 16 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is the largest African 17American Greek letter sorority, with more than nine hundred chapters in the United States, 18England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, the Bahamas, and the 19Republic of Korea, and represented by a membership of more than two hundred thousand 20college-educated women; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 21RS-1216 ORIGINAL HR NO. 19 1 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Sorority, Incorporated, uses a five-point program of 2economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, 3physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement to assist the global 4community; and 5 WHEREAS, represented in the ranks of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, 6are such notable women as former state senators Diane E. Bajoie and Cheryl Gray Evans, 7former state representatives Renee Gill Pratt, Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Rosalind Peychaud, 8and Jalila Jefferson Bullock, and Senator Karen Carter Peterson, all of whom have left 9indelible imprints on this state's history; and 10 WHEREAS, on this Red and White Day, the sorority honors and celebrates all of the 11African American female legislators serving the public, and who make a major impact on 12their respective communities and the state by championing important issues; and 13 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, 14on one hundred eight years of service and for its outstanding achievements in the 15community, the state, and the world. 16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 17Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Thursday, April 29, 2021, as Red and White 18Day at the legislature; does hereby commend the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 19Incorporated, for their exceptional achievements and manifold contributions; and does 20hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization and its members for the tremendous 21honor and pride that they bring to their local communities, the state, and the nation. 22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 23Beverly E. Smith, national president and chief executive officer, grand chapter of Delta 24Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to Michelle Brown, regional director for the 25southwest region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
