ENROLLED 2021 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 25 BY REPRESENTATIVES ILLG, AMEDEE, BOURRIAQUE, WILFORD CARTER, CORMIER, COX, ECHOLS, EDMONSTON, FARNUM, GADBERRY, GOUDEAU, GREEN, HILFERTY, HORTON, HUGHES, HUVAL, JENKINS, MIKE JOHNSON, KERNER, LYONS, MACK, MARINO, MOORE, NEWELL, ORGERON, RISER, SCHEXNAYDER, STAGNI, THOMAS, VILLIO, WHEAT, AND ZERINGUE A RESOLUTION To recognize April 20, 2021, as Young Marines Day at the state capitol and to commend the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Young Marines unit on being recognized as National Unit of the Year. WHEREAS, the Young Marines is a national youth organization whose mission is to positively impact America's future by providing quality youth development programs for boys and girls that nurture and develop responsible citizens who enjoy and promote a healthy and drug-free lifestyle; and WHEREAS, annually, the Young Marines National Headquarters recognizes outstanding units throughout the country and names a National Unit of the Year; and WHEREAS, the selection of a unit as a National Unit of the Year is an honor that recognizes that particular unit as an embodiment of all the best of the organization and as uniquely excellent in the areas of community service, anti-drug education, youth leadership development, and veterans appreciation; and WHEREAS, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, or JPSO, Young Marines program was established by the late Sheriff Harry Lee; thousands of youth have passed through its ranks since inception, and it continues to be a focal point of community relations under Sheriff Joe Lopinto; and WHEREAS, the JPSO Young Marines unit accumulated more than 15,000 community service hours and more than 2,000 hours of anti-drug education in one year, included twenty-four leadership school graduates, and participated in numerous veterans appreciation events; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 25 ENROLLED WHEREAS, the JPSO Young Marines unit was also the recipient of the 2020 Drug Enforcement Agency Enrique "Kiki" Camarena Award, which recognizes drug demand reduction efforts through community education and peer-to-peer role modeling; and WHEREAS, the JPSO Young Marines unit was recognized on May 9, 2020, as the Young Marines National Unit of the Year; and WHEREAS, the JPSO Young Marines youth members and adult volunteers merit a special measure of commendation for the outstanding work that they do to serve their community, create responsible citizens, and promote a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize April 20, 2021, as Young Marines Day at the state capitol in gratitude for the work of Young Marines programs across the United States and the state of Louisiana in providing quality youth development opportunities and does hereby commend the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Young Marines unit upon the momentous event of its selection as the 2020 Young Marines National Unit of the Year. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to William P. Davis, chief executive officer of Young Marines, to Sheriff Joe Lopinto, and to Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Young Marines Unit Commander Tammy Williams.
