Austin 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., and its executive director, Cheryl R. Austin. 3 WHEREAS, Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., was established in 1993 and serves the 4Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans; and 5 WHEREAS, Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., or GTC, is a community based, 501(c), 6nonprofit organization that was formed to address all areas of community development, 7including affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families and the development of 8small businesses in the Tremé neighborhood; and 9 WHEREAS, over the past twenty years, GTC has worked to improve living 10conditions in Tremé and preserve the neighborhood's unique culture; it has held over one 11hundred community meetings to address these issues and helped usher in the development 12of affordable housing programs, community maintenance programs, a youth-run restaurant, 13a collaboration with the National American Civilian Corps, health testing, community 14gardens, housing and credit counseling services, and most recently, water management to 15prevent flooding; and 16 WHEREAS, Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., partnered with Water Wise Gulf South 17in 2016 to start the Water Wise Tremé Initiative; GTC is currently responsible for fifty-four 18green infrastructure interventions and stores up to 34,296 gallons of storm water per weather 19event; and 20 WHEREAS, Cheryl R. Austin is the executive director of Greater Tremé Consortium 21and a lifelong resident of the Tremé neighborhood; as director, she has advocated for Page 1 of 2 HLS 21RS-1166 ORIGINAL HR NO. 42 1increased funding to alleviate the social and economic struggles of her neighborhood, and 2as a result of her efforts, the consortium has secured multiple years of both private and 3public funding to construct new housing and repair low-to-moderate income residents' 4homes; she has also organized beautification projects, youth services, and cultural events to 5help uplift the Tremé neighborhood and highlight its unique qualities; she has also advocated 6to increase awareness of the importance of green infrastructure and stormwater management 7initiatives; and 8 WHEREAS, Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., and its executive director, Cheryl R. 9Austin, are most deserving of recognition for their efforts to preserve the historic Tremé 10neighborhood in New Orleans. 11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 12Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc., and its 13executive director, Cheryl R. Austin; does hereby recognize Ms. Austin's inspiring work as 14an advocate for the Tremé neighborhood, green infrastructure, and stormwater management 15initiatives; and does hereby extend sincere hopes that they continue to enjoy success in their 16efforts to preserve the historic Tremé neighborhood and its unique culture. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 18executive director of Greater Tremé Consortium, Inc.
