COMMENDATIONS:  Commends J. Terrell Brown, Sr., on receipt of an honorary
doctorate of humane letters from Southern University
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend J. Terrell Brown, Sr., on receipt of an honorary doctorate of humane letters
3 from Southern University.
4 WHEREAS, J. Terrell Brown, Sr., graduated from Louisiana State University in
51964 with a bachelor's degree in finance and insurance; he is a tremendously successful
6entrepreneur who cofounded GMFS Mortgage and GoAuto Insurance, two successful Baton
7Rouge-based businesses; his business ventures often focus on investing and consulting with
8those seeking to develop new and innovative approaches to real estate, housing, mobile
9technology, movie production, and software; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown is an involved member of the Baton Rouge business
11community; he has served in many leadership roles including chairman of the board of the
12Credit Bureau Foundation of Baton Rouge; chairman and CEO of United Companies; and
13director on the boards of US Agencies, Sizelar Properties, Hibernia National Bank, Freeport
14McMoRan Sulphur, and Piccadilly Corporation; and
15 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown also commits his time and expertise to give back to the
16community; he has served as chairman of the board of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and
17Research Park Corporation, and he is the cofounder of Innovation Catalyst, a nonprofit
18venture development organization; he also served on the board of the LSU Foundation and
19the E.J. Ourso College of Business Dean's Advisory Council; and
20 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown served for over two decades on the board of LSU's
21Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, including three years as chair; and

1 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown's involvement in the Baton Rouge community has earned
2him numerous accolades; in 1997, he was inducted into the Ourso College of Business Hall
3of Distinction, and in 1998, he was inducted into the LSU Alumni Association Hall of
4Distinction; and
5 WHEREAS, on Friday, May 14, 2021, during the Spring 2021 Commencement,
6Southern University will award Mr. Brown an honorary doctorate of humane letters; he was
7the benefactor for the university's first endowed chair, The James A. Joseph/United
8Companies Financial Corporation Endowed Chair in Small and Minority Business
9Enterprise; and
10 WHEREAS, J. Terrell Brown, Sr., is a true pillar in the Baton Rouge business
11community; his commitment to the community through philanthropic donations and civic
12involvement is deserving of the highest recognition.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend J. Terrell Brown, Sr., on receipt of an
15honorary doctorate of humane letters from Southern University; does hereby recognize
16Mr. Brown's decades of service to the Baton Rouge community; and does hereby extend
17sincere hopes for his continued success.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
19J. Terrell Brown, Sr.
