HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 98
BY REPRESENTATIVE FONTENOT
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Designates May 15-22, 2021, as Police Week in
Louisiana
1	A RESOLUTION
2To designate the week of May 15-22, 2021, as Police Week in the state of Louisiana and to
3 commend the service of law enforcement officers.
4 WHEREAS, members of law enforcement agencies provide a vital public service and
5have essential roles in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Louisiana; and
6 WHEREAS, approximately nine hundred thousand law enforcement officers serve
7their communities across the United States; and
8 WHEREAS, police and peace officers protect citizens twenty-four hours a day and
9seven days a week; and
10 WHEREAS, nearly sixty thousand assaults against law enforcement officers are
11reported annually, resulting in approximately sixteen thousand injuries; and
12 WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, more than twenty thousand law
13enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty;
14and
15 WHEREAS, the names of fallen public servants are engraved on the walls of the
16National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and
17 WHEREAS, in the United States, two hundred sixty-four officers died in the line of
18duty in 2020; and
19 WHEREAS, twenty-one new names of fallen heroes will be added to the National
20Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this year; and

1 WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be
2honored during the thirty-second annual National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund
3candlelight vigil held on May 13, 2021; and
4 WHEREAS, May 15, 2021, is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor
5of all fallen officers and their families, and the United States flag is flown at half-staff in
6many locations throughout our great nation; and
7 WHEREAS, law enforcement officers are guardians of life and property, defenders
8of individual rights, and warriors against crime, and they merit sincere commendations for
9their steadfast commitment to securing and preserving the welfare and safety of their fellow
10citizens.
11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
12Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designated the week of May 15-22, 2021, as Police
13Week in Louisiana; does hereby commend the state's law enforcement officers for their
14noble and exemplary accomplishments; and does hereby express enduring appreciation for
15the tremendous honor and pride they bring to Louisiana citizens.
16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
17president of the Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police.
