SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 35

CONDOLENCES.  Expresses condolences upon the death of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody
Valluzzo.
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Ann
3 Theresa "Nancy" Mellody Valluzzo.
4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
5 Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody
6 Valluzzo, at the age of eighty, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer, which as with
7 every other challenge in her life, she approached with pragmatism and tenacity; and
8 WHEREAS, Nancy was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to John and Clare Mellody
9 on January 20, 1940, and was raised in Battle Creek, Michigan, where she met her lifelong
10 love, Charles Valluzzo; and
11 WHEREAS, Nancy and Charles can be seen in their second grade picture together
12 at St. Phillips School and receiving the Sacrament of Communion in that same year was a
13 precursor to the multiple Sacraments they would lovingly share together; and
14 WHEREAS, much like the lyric in Irish Eyes are Smiling, "… when Irish eyes are
15 smiling, sure, they steal your heart away." Nancy did just that; she stole Charlie's heart; and
16 WHEREAS, Nancy and Charlie attended school together through college at Western
17 Michigan University and married in 1959; and
18 WHEREAS, the love they shared together along with their strong Catholic Faith

1 provided a foundation for generations as Nancy was the mother of John Valluzzo (wife Jan),
2 Mary Rebecca Montes de Oca (husband Fermin), Timothy Valluzzo (wife Mary Kate),
3 Christopher Valluzzo (wife Krista) and Patrick Valluzzo (wife Rebecca); and
4 WHEREAS, she was the Nana/Nanny of nineteen grandchildren: Nicholas Valluzzo,
5 Michael Valluzzo, FM Montes de Oca, Mellody Buford, Christina Pipes, Anthony Montes
6 de Oca, Charles Valluzzo II, Mary Katherine Montes de Oca, Caroline Valluzzo, Mary
7 Alexandra Montes de Oca, Virginia Valluzzo, Harrison Valluzzo, Murphy Valluzzo, Locke
8 Valluzzo, Pierson Valluzzo, Sean Valluzzo, Clare Valluzzo, Gabriel Valluzzo, and Mary
9 Emery Valluzzo, and great grandmother of fifteen; and
10 WHEREAS, from the day the family arrived in Baton Rouge, Nancy provided
11 impactful leadership and commitment to the many organizations she was involved with: she
12 was a Board Member of the American Diabetes Association of Baton Rouge, YWCO, and
13 McMains Children's Development Center; and
14 WHEREAS, she was the proud recipient of the Mother Seaton Award for her tireless
15 efforts at St. Thomas More School and Parish; and
16 WHEREAS, Nancy's passion for her Irish heritage was evident in her home, her
17 faith, and her cooking; on St. Patrick's Day it was common practice to relocate the "o" at the
18 end of Valluzzo and move it to the front; and
19 WHEREAS, she had many dear friends in life, Birthday Group, Bridge Group, Book
20 Club, Destin Group, and more over the years; she loved to faithfully toast the sunset during
21 Golden Hour; and
22 WHEREAS, she was a voracious reader, an avid tennis player, an accomplished
23 Bridge player, and an incredible cook who loved to snow ski and play golf; and
24 WHEREAS, she went by many names: Sweetsie, Mom, Nana/ Nanny, and Nancy;
25 she truly loved living life and will forever be missed; and
26 WHEREAS, the death of Nancy Valluzzo has evoked a tremendous sense of loss
27 within the Baton Rouge community, recalling her many years of public service and personal
28 interactions - a remarkable and magnificent woman and a Baton Rouge treasure.
29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
30 express its heartfelt sympathies at the passing of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody Valluzzo,

1 an outstanding community servant; does hereby record for posterity her noteworthy
2 contributions to Baton Rouge and to Louisiana; and does hereby express enduring gratitude
3 for her life so devoted to the public good.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
5 family of Ann Theresa "Nancy" Mellody Valluzzo.
