Recognizes the Apalachee Indians Talimali Band as an Indian tribe of the state. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To recognize the Apalachee Indians Talimali Band as an Indian tribe of the state of 3 Louisiana. 4 WHEREAS, the Indian community of the Apalachee Indians Talimali Band has 5 existed in the vicinity of Gorum/Cloutierville, Louisiana, since the earliest settlement of 6 these areas to the present; and 7 WHEREAS, descendants of the Indians residing in the area consisting of Louisiana 8 at the first contact with Europeans have continued to reside in this area of Louisiana since 9 that time; and 10 WHEREAS, extensive genealogical and historical research has been accomplished 11 and clearly identifies the core ancestry of this tribe as (Historical Tribe(s)) Indians; and 12 WHEREAS, the policy of the state of Louisiana provides for recognition of Indian 13 tribes within its borders, support of their tribal aspirations, preservation of their cultural 14 heritage, improvement of their economic condition, and assisting them in the achievement 15 of their just rights. 16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 17 formally recognize the Apalachee Indians Talimali Band as an Indian tribe of the state. 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Legislature of Louisiana hereby memorializes, Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 69 SLS 21RS-2533 ORIGINAL 1 requests, and urges the Congress of the United States and the United States Bureau of Indian 2 Affairs to take such steps as are necessary to effect, in the near future, formal recognition 3 of the Apalachee Indians Talimali Band, to acknowledge that the rights of the Apalachee 4 Indians Talimali Band are no less than those of other Indian tribes in the United States, and 5 to take such executive or congressional action as may be appropriate. 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 7 president of the United States, the presiding officers of the Senate and the House of 8 Representatives of the Congress of the United States, each member of the Louisiana 9 Congressional delegation, the director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, United States 10 Department of the Interior, and the leadership of the Apalachee Indians Talimali Band.
