2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 46 BY SENATORS BERNARD, ABRAHAM, BARROW, BOUDREAUX, BOUIE, CARTER, CATHEY, CLOUD, CORTEZ, FIELDS, HARRIS, HENRY, HEWITT, JOHNS, MCMATH, MILLIGAN, ROBERT MILLS, MIZELL, PEACOCK, POPE, PRICE, REESE, SMITH, TALBOT, WARD AND WOMACK A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf on being named as a 2021 inductee of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talent worthy of being named to the hall of fame; and WHEREAS, the 2021 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf; and WHEREAS, he was born on March 9, 1969, in Gulfport, Mississippi, and attended Gulfport High School, where he was named Mississippi's Mr. Basketball twice and was also a McDonald's All-American; and WHEREAS, he attended Louisiana State University, where he was a standout freshman and set the scoring record for a freshman, with 55 points in a single game, a NCAA record for points by a freshman scoring 965 points in just thirty two games; and WHEREAS, he was named SEC Player of the Year and First-Team All American two years in a row; and WHEREAS, he was selected as the third pick in the 1990 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets and in his nine seasons in the NBA he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 1993, averaging 14.6 points and 3.5 rebounds throughout his NBA career; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 46 ENROLLED WHEREAS, after playing in the NBA, he played basketball for multiple international leagues, namely, the Turkish Basketball League, the Russian Basketball Super League, the Italian Basketball League, the Saudi Basketball League, and the Basketball Japan League; and WHEREAS, he is currently playing in the BIG3 Basketball League, a 3-on-3 basketball league, whose rosters include both former NBA players and international basketball players. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, on being named as a 2021 inductee of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
