2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 5 BY SENATOR FOIL A RESOLUTION To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Dr. Joseph Aaron Roy. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana has learned of the passing of a great gentleman and family patriarch, Dr. Joseph Aaron Roy, on January 13, 2021, at the age of eighty-three; and WHEREAS, Aaron Roy was born on April 16, 1937, in Opelousas, Louisiana, to Abner Roy Jr. and Edith Wyble Roy; and WHEREAS, he graduated from the Academy of the Immaculate Conception in Opelousas and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roy received his medical degree from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, worked as a general practitioner from 1965 to 1972, and served as the coroner in Buras, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, after completing an Ear, Nose, and Throat residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, he practiced medicine in Baton Rouge for twenty-three years before retiring in 2000, and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and WHEREAS, Aaron met Linda Colligan, his future wife and the love of his life, in 1959 on a blind date; and WHEREAS, Aaron and Linda were married and shared their life together for sixty years, spending significant time in Cashiers, North Carolina, since the 1990s, where they were active members of the vibrant mountain community; and WHEREAS, in 2018 Aaron and Linda moved to St. James Place in Baton Rouge to take advantage of a relaxed lifestyle and community-based living; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 5 ENROLLED WHEREAS, even after retirement, Dr. Roy remained involved in medicine and the medical community, attending weekly cancer conferences with other dedicated colleagues; and WHEREAS, he was a brilliant physician with a warm and wonderful bedside manner who always made his patients feel like family and who remained kind and easygoing even when a case was difficult; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roy was active in the community and worked tirelessly for the benefit of others; and WHEREAS, he was an avid traveler, reader, gardener, and cook among his many interests and activities; and WHEREAS, Dr. Roy was beloved by family, friends, and colleagues, and had a kind heart, a gentle demeanor, and a quiet authority that earned respect without commanding it; and WHEREAS, he was a gentle and loving person, who was devoted to his family and who showed them the world and loved them selflessly; and WHEREAS, Aaron Roy was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, and friend who is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Linda Colligan Roy; sister, Verna Roy Ohlmeyer; brother, Charles Roy (Delores); devoted children, Stephanie Roy, Bret Roy (Wendy), Allison Sanchez (Blanchard Jr.), and Doug Roy; and grandchildren, Kelsey Sanchez Gleaton (Sam), Blanchard Sanchez III, Steven Sanchez, Camille Roy, Anna Roy, and Jude Roy; and WHEREAS, the memory of Aaron Roy will always remain in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever reap the benefits of his lifetime of achievement; and WHEREAS, those who knew and loved him will continue to swell with pride when they remember Aaron Roy as a positive force in his community; and WHEREAS, Aaron Roy represented all that is good about Louisiana as a man with unique gifts and a charitable spirit, and with his passing, Louisiana has lost one of its finest citizens, who left an indelible mark on the lives of the many individuals whom he touched with his truly inspiring qualities and generosity, and who is now terribly missed but will never be forgotten. Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 5 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend its sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Joseph Aaron Roy upon the occasion of his death. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express its appreciation for Aaron Roy's enduring contributions, which shall long continue to be a source of deep honor for the city of Baton Rouge, the state of Louisiana and beyond, and does hereby pay tribute to his remarkable legacy, which shall live long in the hearts of those who were touched by his humanity.
