SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 76

SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH. Designates Monday, May 10, 2021, as Alzheimer's
Awareness Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To recognize Monday, May 10, 2021, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the Louisiana State
3 Capitol.
4 WHEREAS, there are currently more than ninety-two thousand people in Louisiana
5 suffering from Alzheimer's disease or other forms of related dementia; and
6 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United
7 States; and
8 WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than two hundred thirty-two thousand family
9 caregivers in Louisiana provide three hundred and eighteen million hours of unpaid care for
10 family members with Alzheimer's disease; and
11 WHEREAS, studies predict that by the year 2025, one hundred ten thousand
12 Louisiana residents will be living with Alzheimer's disease; and
13 WHEREAS, the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include difficulty remembering
14 newly learned information; disorientation; mood and behavioral changes; deepening
15 confusion about events, times, and places; unfounded suspicions about family, friends, and
16 caregivers; and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and walking; and
17 WHEREAS, research is ongoing to uncover critical information for the diagnosis and
18 treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of related dementia.

1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
2 does hereby recognize Monday, May 10, 2021, as Alzheimer's Awareness Day at the
3 Louisiana State Capitol and does hereby encourage residents of the great state of Louisiana
4 to raise awareness of this devastating disease.
