SLS 21RS-243 ORIGINAL 2021 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 9 BY SENATOR BOUDREAUX COMMENDATIONS. Commends Fredrick Prejean Sr. on being named the 2020 Lafayette Civic Cup recipient. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend and congratulate Fredrick "Fred" Prejean Sr. on being named by the 3 Community Foundation of Acadiana as the 2020 recipient of the Lafayette Civic 4 Cup. 5 WHEREAS, the Lafayette Civic Cup sponsored by the Community Foundation of 6 Acadiana, awarded since 1933, is presented to individuals annually based upon leadership, 7 innovation, and the desire to make Lafayette better; and 8 WHEREAS, the recipient for 2020 is Fredrick "Fred" Prejean Sr. who has engaged 9 in a lifetime of humanitarian pursuits, and who is president of Move the Mindset, an 10 organization committed to promoting racial and social justice in Lafayette, which was 11 founded in 2016 and has successfully advocated for the removal of the Alfred Mouton statue 12 in downtown Lafayette; and 13 WHEREAS, born and raised in Lafayette and growing up in the section known as 14 Fightingville, he attended St. Paul's and Holy Rosary Institute and at age seventeen, traveled 15 to the 1963 March on Washington and witnessed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a 16 Dream" speech, an experience which transformed him; and 17 WHEREAS, following six years in the Marine Corps Reserve, Fred Prejean enrolled 18 at Southern University, where he became one of the leaders of a peaceful demonstration Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 9 SLS 21RS-243 ORIGINAL 1 when the state legislature was considering its closure to desegregate higher education 2 institutions, graduating in 1974 with a degree in accounting and business management; and 3 WHEREAS, he also attended the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, 4 and the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University in Durham, North 5 Carolina; and 6 WHEREAS, his community activism spans more than fifty years, having trained as 7 a community organizer with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Student 8 Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Congress of Racial Equality, and his work through 9 Southern Consumers Cooperative helped black entrepreneurs launch startup businesses; and 10 WHEREAS, Fred has also served the community as the committee chairperson for 11 the Heymann Scholarship Academic Awards, chairperson of the Lafayette Planning and 12 Zoning Commission, the Holy Rosary Institute Restoration Committee, a member of the 13 Lafayette chapter of the NAACP, the Greater Southwest Louisiana Black Chamber of 14 Commerce, the Lafayette Housing Advisory Committee, the Lafayette General Advisory 15 Panel, the Lafayette North Plan Coordinating Team, the Lafayette Growth Opportunity 16 Technical Team, the Veazey-McComb Neighborhood Organization, the Freetown-Port Rico 17 Neighborhood Organization, the Heymann Foundation Scholarship Division, the Lafayette 18 Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation, the Sterling Grove Housing 19 Development, and the Holy Family School Board; and 20 WHEREAS, the McComb-Veazey and Freetown-Port Rico neighborhood 21 organizations were formed during his tenure with the planning and zoning commission; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Prejean also served as undersecretary at the Louisiana Department 23 of Wildlife and Fisheries and retired in 2012 as president of the consulting firm Empire 24 Management Inc., thereafter working through Move the Mindset to educate residents, form 25 partnerships, and collaborate with the Equal Justice Initiative; and 26 WHEREAS, Fred has been married to his wife Ola for forty-three years, and they 27 have one daughter and two grandsons; and 28 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, 29 and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon good, strong, 30 driven, and humanitarian men like Fredrick "Fred" Prejean Sr. Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 9 SLS 21RS-243 ORIGINAL 1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 2 does hereby commend and congratulate Fredrick "Fred" Prejean Sr. on being named by the 3 Community Foundation of Acadiana as the 2020 recipient of the Lafayette Civic Cup. 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 5 Frederick "Fred" Prejean Sr. The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Jerry J.
