HB 1069 Engrossed 2022 Regular Session	Jordan
Abstract:  Requires attorneys to be appointed as magistrates for and preside over mayor's courts and
provides for the requirements to be appointed as a magistrate. 
Present law provides for mayors' courts for cities, towns, and villages throughout the state and
provides that the mayor is the presiding official of each such court.
Proposed law requires mayors' courts to be presided over by magistrates, removes the mayors as the
presiding officer of such courts, and provides that the governing authority of each city, town, and
village may appoint an attorney as the magistrate of the magistrate court.
Proposed law requires that every magistrate be an attorney licensed to practice law in this state and
that the attorney be in good standing with the La. State Bar Association.
Proposed law prohibits an elected official of the city, town, or village from being appointed by the
governing authority as magistrate.
Present law provides for the imposition of various court costs.
Proposed law retains present law.
