[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] HB 205 Original 2022 Regular Session Bishop Abstract: Effective Jan. 8, 2024, changes the term limitation on legislators to three and one-half of four consecutive terms in the same house of the legislature, beginning with service on or after Jan. 11, 2016. Present constitution prohibits a person who has been elected to serve as a member of the Senate for more than two and one-half terms in three consecutive terms, that service being during a term of office that began on or after Jan. 8, 1996, from being to the Senate for the succeeding term and prohibits a person who has been elected to serve as a member of the House of Representatives for more than two and one-half terms in three consecutive terms, that service being during a term of office that began on or after Jan. 8, 1996, from being elected to the House for the succeeding term. Proposed constitutional amendment repeals these provisions effective Jan. 8, 2024. Proposed constitutional amendment provides a new limitation effective Jan. 8, 2024, to prohibit a person who has been elected to serve as a member of the Senate for more than three and one-half terms in four consecutive terms, that service being during a term of office that began on or after Jan. 11, 2016, from being elected to the Senate for the succeeding term and prohibits a person who has been elected to serve as a member of the House of Representatives for more than three and one-half terms in four consecutive terms, that service being during a term of office that began on or after Jan. 11, 2016, from being elected to the House for the succeeding term. Provides for submission of the proposed amendment to the voters at the statewide election to be held Nov. 8, 2022. (Amends Const. Art. III, §4(E); Repeals Const. Art. III, §4(E)(1))
