JUDGES:  (Constitutional Amendment) Provides relative to the mandatory retirement age
for judges
1	A JOINT RESOLUTION
2Proposing to amend Article V, Section 23(B) of the Constitution of Louisiana, to provide for
3 the mandatory retirement age for judges; to increase the mandatory retirement age
4 for judges; to provide for submission of the proposed amendment to the electors; and
5 to provide for related matters.
6 Section 1.  Be it resolved by the Legislature of Louisiana, two-thirds of the members
7elected to each house concurring, that there shall be submitted to the electors of the state of
8Louisiana, for their approval or rejection in the manner provided by law, a proposal to
9amend Article V, Section 23(B) of the Constitution of Louisiana, to read as follows:
10 §23.  Judges; Retirement
11	Section 23.

13	(B)  Mandatory Retirement.  Except as otherwise provided in this Section, a
14 judge shall not remain in office beyond his seventieth seventy-second birthday.  A
15 judge who attains seventy seventy-two years of age while serving a term of office
16 shall be allowed to complete that term of office.
17 Section 2.  Be it further resolved that this proposed amendment shall be submitted
18to the electors of the state of Louisiana at the statewide election to be held on November 8,

1 Section 3.  Be it further resolved that on the official ballot to be used at the election,
2there shall be printed a proposition, upon which the electors of the state shall be permitted
3to vote YES or NO, to amend the Constitution of Louisiana, which proposition shall read as
4follows:
5	Do you support an amendment to increase the mandatory retirement age for
6	judges from seventy years of age to seventy-two years of age? (Amends
7	Article V, Section 23(B))

Abstract: Increases the mandatory retirement age for judges from 70 to 72 years of age.
Present constitution provides that a judge shall not remain in office beyond his seventieth
birthday. 
Present constitution further provides that a judge who attains 70 years of age while serving
a term of office shall be allowed to complete that term of office.
Proposed constitution increases the mandatory retirement age from 70 to 72 and allows a
judge who attains 72 years of age while serving a term of office to be allowed to complete
that term.
Provides for submission of the proposed amendment to the voters at the statewide election
to be held Nov. 8, 2022.
