Digest of Bill as Finally Passed by Senate Present law requires a charge or fee be charged for each certificate of inspection and approval issued as provided in present law. Present law provides an exemption from the provisions of present law for student transportation vehicles. Proposed law modifies present law to include an exemption for commercial motor vehicles. Present law requires an annual charge of $30 for the inspection of all commercial motor vehicles which are required to be inspected under the provisions of federal law. Provides no charge or fee other than the $30 fee will be charged for a commercial motor vehicle inspection. Present law requires the motor vehicle inspection station operator who performs the inspection retain $23.75, $2.25 to be transferred to the office of motor vehicles for expenses associated with motor vehicle and financial responsibility programs, and $4 to be transferred to the office of state police for use in traffic law enforcement. Present law requires the adjustment of headlights at no additional cost to the operator of the motor vehicle being inspected be included in the inspection. Specifies that the Legislature of Louisiana declares that a commercial motor vehicle inspection is much more extensive than the inspection mandated in present law and that the increase in fee or charge for the inspection of commercial vehicles is based on the difference in the two types of inspection. Present law authorizes the owner or operator of a commercial motor vehicle truck tractor to obtain a La. commercial motor vehicle inspection certificate to satisfy the requirements of present law (49 CFR 396.17) as an alternate means of compliance with the requirements of present law (49 CFR). Authorizes a trailer or semitrailer being used in combination with a truck tractor meeting the exemption to obtain a La. commercial motor vehicle inspection certificate to satisfy the requirements of present law.
