CRIME:  Provides relative to penalties for the crime of simple cruelty to animals
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 14:102.1(A)(2)(a), relative to cruelty to animals; to provide
3 relative to the penalties for a first offense of the crime of cruelty to animals; and to
4 provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 14:102.1(A)(2)(a) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as
7follows: 
8 ยง102.1.  Cruelty to animals; simple and aggravated
9	A.

11	(2)(a)  Whoever commits the crime of simple cruelty to animals shall be fined
12 not less than three hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars, or imprisoned
13 for not less than thirty days nor more than six months, or both.  In addition, the court
14 may order the offender to pay for any expenses incurred for medical treatment of the
15 animal.

Abstract:  Provides for a minimum fine and imprisonment for a first offense of simple
cruelty to animals.
Present law provides for the crime of simple cruelty to animals and provides that whoever
commits a first offense of simple cruelty to animals shall be fined not more than $1,000, or
imprisoned for not more than six months, or both.
Proposed law amends present law to provide that upon a first offense, the offender shall be
fined not less than $300 nor more than $1,000, or imprisoned for not less than 30 days nor
more than six months, or both.  Further provides that the court may order the offender to pay
for any expenses incurred for medical treatment of the animal.
