CRIME:  Provides relative to the penalties for the crime of unauthorized use of a motor
vehicle
1	AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 14:68.4(B), relative to the crime of unauthorized use of a motor
3 vehicle; to provide relative to criminal penalties;  and to provide for related matters.
4Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
5 Section 1.  R.S. 14:68.4(B) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
6 ยง68.4.  Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle

8	B.  Whoever commits the crime of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle shall 
9 be fined not more than five thousand dollars or imprisoned with or without hard
10 labor for not more than two years or both imprisoned for not more than six months,
11 or may be fined not more than one thousand dollars, or both. If the offender in such
12 cases has been convicted of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle two or more times
13 previously, upon any subsequent conviction he shall be imprisoned, with or without
14 hard labor, for not more than two years, or may be fined not more than two thousand
15 dollars, or both.

Abstract: Changes the penalties for the crime of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Present law provides that unauthorized use of a motor vehicle is the intentional taking or use
of a motor vehicle which belongs to another without the intent to permanently deprive the
other of the motor vehicle permanently.
Present law provides that an offender shall be fined not more than $5,000,  imprisoned with
or without hard labor for not more than two years, or both.
Proposed law amends present law to change the penalties as follows:
(1)First conviction, the offender shall be imprisoned for not more than six months, or
may be fined not more than $1,000, or both.
(2)Upon two or more previous convictions, an offender who receives a subsequent
conviction shall be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than two
years, or may be fined not more than $2,000, or both.
