Abstract: Enhances the penalties for the crime of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Present law provides that unauthorized use of a motor vehicle is the intentional taking or use of a
motor vehicle which belongs to another without the intent to permanently deprive the other of the
motor vehicle permanently.
Present law provides that an offender shall be fined not more than $5,000,  imprisoned with or
without hard labor for not more than two years, or both.
Proposed law amends present law to enhance the penalties as follows:
(1)First conviction, a fine of not more than $5,000, imprisonment with or without hard labor for
not more than two years, or both.
(2)Second conviction, the offender shall be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more
than 10 years, or may be fined not more than $10,000, or both.
(3) Third or subsequent conviction, the offender shall be imprisoned at hard labor for not more
than 20 years, or may be fined not more than $50,000, or both.
