[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] HB 627 Engrossed 2022 Regular Session Bryant Abstract: Changes the penalties for the crime of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Present law provides that unauthorized use of a motor vehicle is the intentional taking or use of a motor vehicle which belongs to another without the intent to permanently deprive the other of the motor vehicle permanently. Present law provides that an offender shall be fined not more than $5,000, imprisoned with or without hard labor for not more than two years, or both. Proposed law amends present law to change the penalties as follows: (1)First conviction, the offender shall be imprisoned for not more than six months, or may be fined not more than $1,000, or both. (2)Upon two or more previous convictions, an offender who receives a subsequent conviction shall be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than two years, or may be fined not more than $2,000, or both.
