SENATE BILL NO. 159

SHERIFFS.  Provides relative to insurance benefits for retirees of the Iberville Parish
Sheriff's Office. (7/1/22)
1	AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 13:5554(MM), relative to the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office group insurance;
3 to provide for payments of life and health insurance premium costs for retirees; to
4 provide for eligibility requirements; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 13:5554(MM) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 ยง5554. Group insurance; kinds; amounts; subrogation

9	MM.(1) Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section,
10 one hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and
11 medical expense insurance and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance
12 contracted for under the provisions of this Section shall be paid in full from the
13 sheriff's general fund for any sheriff or full-time deputy sheriff who has retired
14 from the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office and who is eligible to receive benefits
15 from the Sheriff's Pension and Relief Fund, has attained the age of fifty-five
16 years with twenty or more years of full-time creditable service with the Iberville
17 Parish Sheriff's Office, and is in good standing with Iberville Parish Sheriff's

1 Office at the time of retirement.
2	(2)(a) The provisions of Paragraph (1) of this Subsection shall apply to
3 any sheriff, deputy sheriff, and any other person hired by the Iberville Parish
4 Sheriff's Office on and after July 1, 2022.
5	(b) The provisions of Paragraph (G)(1) of this Section shall apply to
6 sheriffs and deputy sheriffs hired by the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office prior
7 to July 1, 2022.
8 Section 2.  This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2022; if vetoed by the governor
9 and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on the day
10 following such approval by the legislature or July 1, 2022, whichever is later.

Present law requires the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and
dental insurance and the first $10,000 of life insurance contracted for under present law be
paid in full from the Iberville Parish sheriff's general fund for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs
retired with at least 15 years of service who are at least 55 years of age or retired with at least
30 years of service at any age.
Proposed law retains present law, but limits the applicable time period to before July 1,
2022.
Proposed law requires the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office to pay 100% of the premium costs
of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense insurance and the first $10,000 of life
insurance contracted for under the provisions of present law to be paid in full from the
sheriff's general fund for any sheriff or full-time deputy sheriff who has retired from the
Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office and who is eligible to receive benefits from the Sheriff's
Pension and Relief Fund, is at least 55 years of age with 20 or more years of full-time
creditable service with the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office, and is in good standing with the
Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office at the time of retirement.
Proposed law limits applicability to persons that retire from the Iberville Parish Sheriff's
Office on and after July 1, 2022.
Effective July 1, 2022.
