Adds contract attorneys of district public defender offices to group health insurance coverage offered by parish governments. (8/1/22) 1 AN ACT 2 To amend and reenact R.S. 33:5151(C)(1) and (2), relative to health insurance coverage 3 offered by parish governments to their employees and officials; to provide that the 4 district public defender and his employees or contract attorneys may participate in 5 such insurance coverage; and to provide for related matters. 6 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana: 7 Section 1. R.S. 33:5151(C)(1) and (2) are hereby amended and reenacted to read as 8 follows: 9 ยง5151. DIGEST SB 201 Engrossed 2022 Regular Session Jackson Present law provides that for purposes of present law, a district public defender and his employees may participate in any group health insurance program that the parish governing authority offers to its employees and officials. Proposed law retains present law and also allows attorney contractors to participate in any group health insurance program that the parish governing authority offers to its employees and officials. Present law provides that any district public defender office that chooses to participate in the group health insurance program is responsible for the employer portion of the health insurance premium, unless paid for by the parish governing authority through a separate intergovernmental or cooperative endeavor agreement. Proposed law retains present law and adds a third option for premium payment by the parish governing authority of a contract with the attorney contractor of the district public defender.
