PUBLIC DEFENDER.  Requires the Louisiana Public Defender Board to annually enter into
a contract with the University of Louisiana Monroe to provide certain statewide training.

1	AN ACT
2 To enact R.S. 15:147(B)(20), relative to the powers and duties of the Public Defender
3 Board; to provide for entering into contracts with the University of Louisiana at
4 Monroe; to provide for an effective date; and to provide for related matters.
5 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 15:147(B)(20) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 ยง147. Powers, duties, responsibilities

9	B.  In addition to the powers and duties provided for in Subsection A of this
10 Section, the board shall:

12	(20)  Enter into a contract or contracts with the University of Louisiana
13 at Monroe, for the purpose of providing certain statewide training to attorneys,
14 investigators, social workers, and staff.

16 Section 2.  This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2022; if vetoed by the governor
17 and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on the day

1 following such approval by the legislature or July 1, 2022, whichever is later.

Present law provides for the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the Public Defender
Board, and provides that the board may enter into contracts with various attorneys, local,
state, and federal agencies.
Proposed law retains present law and further establishes that the Public Defender Board shall
enter into a contract with the University of Louisiana at Monroe, to provide training to
certain attorneys, investigators, social workers, and staff.
Effective July 1, 2022.
