Present law provides that there will be a mayor's court with jurisdiction over all violations of
municipal ordinances.
Proposed law retains present law and provides that every mayor or magistrate presiding over a
mayor's court pursuant to proposed law will be required to receive training within 90 days of
assuming status as presiding authority, either online or in-person, which training will be provided
by the Louisiana Supreme Court. Provides the training will include ethics and training on judicial
and legal procedures related to mayor's courts. Requires the Legislative Auditor to verify attendance
at the training and assist the Supreme Court in providing the training. Following the initial training
requirements, presiding mayors and magistrates are required, each year, to receive continuing
education as prescribed by the Louisiana Supreme Court.
