Present law provides that notwithstanding the provisions of present law or any other law to the
contrary, the position of assistant chief of police for the city of Westwego will be in the unclassified
service, and the right of selection, appointment, supervision, and discharge for any such position
shall be vested in the chief of police of the city.
Proposed law retains present law and further provides that any person who is appointed from a
position in the classified service to serve as assistant chief of police will not forfeit his seniority
accumulated to the date of his appointment, and he will continue to accumulate seniority during the
time he holds the position of assistant chief of police.
Proposed law further provides that if such person is demoted, or otherwise vacates the position on
the approval of the chief of police, he will be demoted to a position in the classification he held
immediately preceding his appointment as assistant chief of police. If an assistant chief of police who
is appointed from a position in the classified police service is subjected to corrective disciplinary
action, he will have the same rights as any other employee in the municipal fire and police civil
service.
Effective upon signature of the governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
