SHERIFFS.  Provides relative to insurance benefits for retirees of the St. Martin Parish
Sheriff's Office. (7/1/22)
1	AN ACT
2 To amend and reenact R.S. 13:5554(G)(2) and (V), relative to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's
3 Office group insurance; to provide for payments of life and health insurance
4 premium costs for retirees; to provide for eligibility requirements; and to provide for
5 related matters.
6 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1.  R.S. 13:5554(G)(2) and (V) are hereby amended and reenacted to read
8 as follows:

12	(2) The provisions of Paragraph (1) of this Subsection, as applicable to the
13 sheriff's office of St. Martin Parish, shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs hired
14 before July 1, 2009. The provisions of Paragraph (1) of Subsection V of this
15 Section shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs hired on and or after July 1, 2009,
16 and before July 1, 2022. The provisions of Paragraph (2) of Subsection V of this
17 Section shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs hired or rehired on or after

3	V.(1) Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section, the
4 sheriff of St. Martin Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund fifty percent of
5 the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and the first ten
6 thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section
7 if the sheriff or deputy sheriff retired from the St. Martin Parish sheriff's office
8 Sheriff's Office with twenty years of creditable service with the Louisiana Sheriffs'
9 Pension and Relief Fund. The provisions of this Subsection shall apply to sheriffs
10 and deputy sheriffs hired on or after July 1, 2009, and before July 1, 2022.
11	(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section, the
12 sheriff of St. Martin Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the
13 premium costs of group insurance for any retired sheriff and any retired deputy
14 sheriff who retired from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office as follows:
15	(a) Fifty percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and
16 medical expense insurance and ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted
17 for under the provisions of this Section if the sheriff and deputy sheriff retired
18 in good standing with thirty continuous years or more of creditable full-time
19 service with the sheriff's office of St. Martin Parish and is at least fifty-five
20 years of age.
21	(b) Fifty percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and
22 medical expense insurance and ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted
23 for under the provisions of this Section if the sheriff and deputy sheriff retired
24 in good standing with twenty continuous years of creditable full-time service
25 with the sheriff's office of St. Martin Parish and is at least sixty-five years of
26 age.
27	(c) The provisions of this Paragraph shall apply only to persons hired or
28 rehired by the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office on or after July 1, 2022, and
29 who subsequently retire from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office.

1 Section 2.  This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2022; if vetoed by the governor
2 and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on the day
3 following such approval by the legislature or July 1, 2022, whichever is later.

Present law requires the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and
dental insurance and the first $10,000 of life insurance contracted for under present law be
paid in full from the St. Martin Parish sheriff's general fund for all sheriffs and deputy
sheriffs retired with at least 15 years of service who are at least 55 years of age or retired
with at least 30 years of service at any age before July 1, 2009.
Proposed law retains present law.
Present law requires the sheriff of St. Martin Parish to pay out of the sheriff's general fund
50% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense, and the first $10,000
of life insurance contracted for under present law, if the sheriff or deputy sheriff retired from
the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office with 20 years of creditable service with the Louisiana
Sheriffs' Pension and Relief Fund, on or after July 1, 2009.
Proposed law retains present law, but limits the applicable time period from after
July 1, 2009, to on or after July 1, 2009, and before July 1, 2022.
Proposed law requires the St. Martin Parish sheriff to pay out of the sheriff's general fund
the premium costs of group insurance for any retired sheriff and any retired deputy sheriff
who retired from the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office as follows:
(1)50% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense
insurance, and $10,000 of life insurance contracted for under the provisions of
present law if the sheriff and deputy sheriff retired in good standing with 30
continuous years or more of creditable full-time service with the sheriff's office of
St. Martin Parish and is at least 55 years of age.
(2)50% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and medical expense
insurance, and $10,000 of life insurance contracted for under the provisions of
present law if the sheriff and deputy sheriff retired in good standing with 20
continuous years of creditable full-time service with the sheriff's office of St. Martin
Parish and is at least 65 years of age.
Proposed law limits applicability to persons hired or rehired by the St. Martin Parish
Sheriff's Office on or after July 1, 2022, and who subsequently retire from the St. Martin
Parish Sheriff's Office.
Effective July 1, 2022.
