2022 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 36 BY SENATOR CORTEZ A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend Herb Schilling on being honored at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Alumni Association's twenty-fifth annual Spring Gala. WHEREAS, Herbert E. Schilling II, known as "Herbie" to his friends, was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, and is the only child of Herbert and Olga Richard Schilling; and WHEREAS, Herb Schilling is a 1972 graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), currently named as the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (ULL), with a degree in business management; he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity; and he was a four-year letterman on the 1971 USL golf team that won the Gulf State Conference Championship and played in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship; and WHEREAS, upon graduation from USL, Schilling enlisted in the United States Army Reserves and upon return from active duty, he went to work in his family's business, Schilling Distributing Company; and WHEREAS, Schilling was required to work in the family business during high school summers and college, in every position and division, and during his career, he has been the company's sales manager, general manager, vice president, and president; and WHEREAS, in 1981, under his guidance, Schilling Distributing earned Anheuser-Busch's inaugural Ambassador of Excellence Award; only six of one thousand four hundred seventy distributorships nationwide earned the honor; and WHEREAS, in 1983, Schilling was selected for Anheuser-Busch's Wholesale Advisory Panel and two years later in 1985, he was elected chairman by his fellow panel members; Schilling remains the youngest person ever to serve in that role; and WHEREAS, in addition to Anheuser-Busch beers, he has expanded Schilling Distributing's products to more than two hundred brands of beer, nonalcoholic products, water, and a wide variety of wines and spirits; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 36 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Schilling has purchased two local radio stations; he has launched Argus Security; he is a founding partner of Dolphin Compactors; and he is a part owner of Louisiana Rice Mill, Fairway Logistics, Acadiana Waste Services, and iTA Truck Sales and Service; and WHEREAS, in 1980, Schilling resurrected the Louisiana Open State golf tournament and then founded The Louisiana Open, Incorporated, a nonprofit organization that runs the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, a pathway to the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour, and the nonprofit has donated more than four million dollars to charities including the Boys and Girls Club of Acadiana, Hospice of Acadiana, the Children's Museum of Acadiana, Hearts of Hope, and Louisiana Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA); and WHEREAS, Schilling also started the nonprofit Recycling Foundation, which provided curbside recycling to residents in the city of Lafayette; he was one of the founders of the Upper Lafayette Economic Development Foundation; and he is a founding member of One Acadiana and served on its chief executive officer advisory board; and WHEREAS, an active entrepreneur, Schilling developed Pelican Park in Carencro, Louisiana, and the facility opened in 1987 as the premier softball complex in the United States; and WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Lafayette, the community has been a strong influence on Schilling's decision to become involved in community organizations that positively affect the growth of Lafayette and the Acadiana area. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Herb Schilling on being honored at the UL-Lafayette Alumni Association's twenty-fifth annual Spring Gala.
