Commends Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for hosting the "Live Well Baton Rouge" event on May 14, 2022. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for hosting the "Live Well Baton Rouge" 3 event on May 14, 2022. 4 WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, cancer is ranked as the 5 second highest leading cause of death in Louisiana; and 6 WHEREAS, there will be an estimated 28,680 new cancer cases in 2022; and 7 WHEREAS, there will be an estimated nearly 10,000 deaths in Louisiana in 2022 8 with mortality rates well above the national average; and 9 WHEREAS, according to the National Cancer Institute's State Cancer Profile, there 10 were 487.4 cases of cancer per 100,000 residents in East Baton Rouge Parish and 159.6 11 deaths from 2015-2019; and 12 WHEREAS, according to the Louisiana Tumor Registry, more than 2,000 cases of 13 cancer are diagnosed per year and 750 deaths annually, exceeding the national average for 14 higher incidence and mortality rate; and 15 WHEREAS, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has provided more than 100,000 free 16 cancer screenings since 2002; and 17 WHEREAS, in 2022, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center's Prevention on the Go early 18 detection program marks its 20th year, thanks to tremendous community support; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 50 SLS 22RS-2348 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, according to the Louisiana Department of Health, personal habits and 2 lifestyle may also contribute to cancer; good nutrition, regular exercise, protection from too 3 much sun, and not smoking or being around secondhand smoke can all reduce the risk of 4 cancer; and 5 WHEREAS, since 2008, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has hosted an annual 6 community health event, now known as "Live Well Baton Rouge"; nearly 6,000 people have 7 been screened and 22 cancers diagnosed with services provided to many who otherwise may 8 not have access to early detection screening with 65% of participants having never been 9 screened before, and 71% representing minority populations. 10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 11 commend Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for hosting the "Live Well Baton Rouge" event 12 on May 14, 2022. 13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mary 14 Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
