Tate IV on being elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts & Sciences. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend Louisiana State University President William F. Tate IV on being elected to 3 the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 4 WHEREAS, Louisiana State University (LSU) President William F. Tate IV is 5 among the world's most accomplished scholars, scientists, writers, and artists, as well as 6 civic, business, and philanthropic leaders by virtue of his election to the American Academy 7 of Arts and Sciences; and 8 WHEREAS, Tate joins other experts who are exploring the challenges facing society 9 and identifying solutions that address issues of importance to the nation and to the world; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1780, is both 12 an honorary society that recognizes and celebrates the excellence of its members, and an 13 independent research center convening leaders from across disciplines, professions, and 14 perspectives to address significant challenges; and 15 WHEREAS, for more than two hundred forty years, the Academy has been electing 16 and engaging exceptional individuals including Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton 17 as well as Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, Martin Luther King Jr, and Stephen Hawking; and 18 WHEREAS, this year's election of two hundred sixty-one new members, which Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 106 SLS 22RS-2642 ORIGINAL 1 includes thirty-seven individuals from sixteen countries, continues a tradition of recognizing 2 accomplishments and leadership in academia, the arts, industry, public policy, and research; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, Tate is the seventh individual affiliated with LSU elected to the 5 Academy; and 6 WHEREAS, Tate earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics with a minor 7 in mathematical sciences from Northern Illinois University; a Master of Arts degree in 8 mathematical sciences education from the University of Texas at Dallas; and a Doctor of 9 Philosophy in mathematics education with a cognate in human development from the 10 University of Maryland, College Park; and 11 WHEREAS, Tate was awarded the Anna Julia Cooper postdoctoral fellowship to 12 study social and public policy at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and he completed 13 a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine, where 14 he earned the Master of Psychiatric Epidemiology degree; and 15 WHEREAS, Tate's research has focused on the social determinants of mathematics 16 performance; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) attainment; and the 17 development of epidemiological and geospatial models to explain the social determinants 18 of educational attainment as well as health and developmental outcomes; and 19 WHEREAS, at LSU, Tate has introduced the Scholarship First Agenda which has 20 the mission to impact and serve Louisiana - providing pathways to higher learning, 21 addressing critical problems through groundbreaking research and discovery, and bettering 22 the lives of citizens in every parish by focusing on five areas: agriculture, biotechnology, 23 coast, defense, and energy; and 24 WHEREAS, Tate is the recipient of numerous research recognitions including 25 elections to the National Academy of Education, Sigma Xi, and Fellow status in the 26 American Educational Research Association (AERA), as well as association-related honors 27 including a Presidential Citation, the Distinguished Scholar Award in Mathematics 28 Education, and the Distinguished Contributions in Education Research Lifetime 29 Achievement Award-Division G; and 30 WHEREAS, prior to being named LSU president, Tate served as the Executive Vice Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 106 SLS 22RS-2642 ORIGINAL 1 President for Academic Affairs and the Provost at the University of South Carolina; he was 2 the dean of the Graduate School and the Vice Provost for Graduate Education at Washington 3 University in St. Louis; and he also spent time at Texas Christian University and the 4 University of Wisconsin - Madison. 5 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 6 does hereby commend Louisiana State University President William F. Tate IV on being 7 elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 9 William F. Tate IV.
