SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
BY SENATOR JACKSON 
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH.  Designates May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the State
Capitol and commends the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To designate Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the State Capitol and to commend the
3 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
4 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, has the distinction of being
5 the first Greek-letter sorority established by African-American college women; and
6 WHEREAS, in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was founded at
7 Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and
8 WHEREAS, the sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in Service to All Mankind"
9 spans domestic and international boundaries, and involves the services of members of more
10 than one thousand chapters across the world; and
11 WHEREAS, Louisiana hosts chapters on college and university campuses, in
12 addition to hosting alumnae groups active throughout the state; and
13 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is a union of over three
14 hundred thousand energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained women who endeavor
15 to promote community initiatives in health preservation and preventative health education,
16 academic excellence, civic engagement, and economic empowerment; and
17 WHEREAS, the chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated encourage
18 their members to become involved in five primary service target areas that actively

1 contribute to the educational, civic, and social lives of the citizens of Louisiana; and
2 WHEREAS, the five target areas of the sorority's international program,
3 Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service are: HBCU For Life: A Call to
4 Action, Women's Healthcare and Wellness, Building Your Economic Legacy, The Arts!, and
5 Global Impact; and
6 WHEREAS, in addition, the sorority collaborates with Soles 4 Souls and Lions Club
7 International and focuses on breast cancer awareness and the promotion of heart health; and
8 WHEREAS, whether making and sending dresses and shirts to little girls and boys
9 in Haiti; providing support to organizations that assist refugees and their families integrate
10 into American life; saluting the Harlem renaissance; providing guidance on care for
11 caregivers, credit repair and monitoring, or entrepreneurship and the black dollar; helping
12 high school students demystify the college admissions and enrollment process; or developing
13 emerging young leaders through mentoring programs throughout the nation, the women of
14 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are committed to making a positive impact upon
15 campuses, communities, the nation, and the world; and
16 WHEREAS, AKA Day at the State Capitol is a national program whereby sorority
17 members meet with their legislators to address issues that are pertinent to their communities;
18 and
19 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
20 Sorority, Incorporated for one hundred fourteen years of exemplary leadership and
21 outstanding community service and to designate Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the
22 State Capitol.
23 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
24 does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the State Capitol and hereby
25 commends the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated for the tremendous honor and
26 pride that they bring to their families, friends, and communities, and to the state of
27 Louisiana, the nation, and the world at large.
28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to
29 Glenda Glover, international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and
30 Jaya T. Hayes, the 26th south central regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
