SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
BY SENATOR JACKSON 
A RESOLUTION
To designate Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the State Capitol and to commend the
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, has the distinction of being
the first Greek-letter sorority established by African-American college women; and
WHEREAS, in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was founded at
Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, the sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in Service to All Mankind"
spans domestic and international boundaries, and involves the services of members of more
than one thousand chapters across the world; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana hosts chapters on college and university campuses, in
addition to hosting alumnae groups active throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is a union of over three
hundred thousand energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained women who endeavor
to promote community initiatives in health preservation and preventative health education,
academic excellence, civic engagement, and economic empowerment; and
WHEREAS, the chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated encourage
their members to become involved in five primary service target areas that actively
contribute to the educational, civic, and social lives of the citizens of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the five target areas of the sorority's international program,
Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service are: HBCU For Life: A Call to
Action, Women's Healthcare and Wellness, Building Your Economic Legacy, The Arts!, and
Global Impact; and
WHEREAS, in addition, the sorority collaborates with Soles 4 Souls and Lions Club
International and focuses on breast cancer awareness and the promotion of heart health; and

WHEREAS, whether making and sending dresses and shirts to little girls and boys
in Haiti; providing support to organizations that assist refugees and their families integrate
into American life; saluting the Harlem renaissance; providing guidance on care for
caregivers, credit repair and monitoring, or entrepreneurship and the black dollar; helping
high school students demystify the college admissions and enrollment process; or developing
emerging young leaders through mentoring programs throughout the nation, the women of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are committed to making a positive impact upon
campuses, communities, the nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, AKA Day at the State Capitol is a national program whereby sorority
members meet with their legislators to address issues that are pertinent to their communities;
and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated for one hundred fourteen years of exemplary leadership and
outstanding community service and to designate Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the
State Capitol.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2022, as AKA Day at the State Capitol and hereby
commends the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated for the tremendous honor and
pride that they bring to their families, friends, and communities, and to the state of
Louisiana, the nation, and the world at large.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to
Glenda Glover, international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and
Jaya T. Hayes, the 26th south central regional director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated.
