SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 148

COMMENDATIONS. Commends and congratulates Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire on her
selection as a 2022 Louisiana Legends honoree by Friends of LPB.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend and congratulate Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire on her selection as a 2022
3 Louisiana Legends honoree by Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB).
4 WHEREAS, Friends of LPB has honored Louisiana's best and brightest as Louisiana
5 Legends for more than thirty years; and
6 WHEREAS, the 2022 honorees have a unique distinction as Dr. Saundra Yancy
7 McGuire and her husband Dr. Stephen C. McGuire were the first married couple to be
8 honored for their individual accomplishments in Science at the Friends of LPB awards gala
9 and auction held on April 28, 2022, at Louisiana's Old State Capitol; and
10 WHEREAS, Saundra Yancy McGuire received her B.S. degree, magna cum laude,
11 in 1970 from Southern University in Baton Rouge; received her Master's degree from
12 Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and received her PhD from the University of
13 Tennessee at Knoxville, where she received the Chancellor's Citation for Exceptional
14 Professional Promise; and
15 WHEREAS, Dr. McGuire spent eleven years at Cornell University where she
16 received the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award before coming to Baton Rouge to teach
17 at Louisiana State University; and
18 WHEREAS, Dr. McGuire is the director emerita of the Center for Academic Success

1 at LSU where a scholarship has been created in her name to honor the accomplishments and
2 impact that Dr. McGuire has had upon the center, the students, and the LSU community; and
3 WHEREAS, Dr. McGuire has received numerous awards and accolades, including
4 the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring
5 presented to her in a White House Oval Office Ceremony; and
6 WHEREAS, her book, Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can
7 Incorporate into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation
8 was released in 2015 and is a Stylus Publishing bestseller; and
9 WHEREAS, the student version of her book, Teach Yourself How to Learn:
10 Strategies You Can Use to Ace Any Course at Any Level was released in 2018; and
11 WHEREAS, Dr. McGuire has worked actively with university faculty and students
12 to increase their understanding of the application of cognitive science and learning theory
13 to increase student academic performance and continues to work toward improving learning
14 strategies used by university students; she also works to reform pre-college and college
15 teaching methods, and seeks to increase the number of under-represented minority and
16 women students who are interested in and preparing to pursue careers in science, technology,
17 engineering, and mathematics.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
19 does hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire on her selection as a
20 2022 Louisiana Legends honoree by Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting and does
21 hereby express its sincere gratitude for her efforts to improve educational attainment in the
22 state, the LSU community, and most particularly, the many students and faculty who have
23 been blessed to work with her directly.
24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
25 Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire.
