SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 41
BY SENATOR BOUDREAUX 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Tubby Smith on the occasion of his retirement after 30
years as a college head basketball coach.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Tubby Smith for his long and distinguished career as an outstanding college
3 head basketball coach on the occasion of his richly deserved retirement.
4 WHEREAS, Tubby Smith has issued an official statement announcing his decision
5 to step down as head basketball coach for the High Point Panthers at High Point University
6 and to retire; and
7 WHEREAS, he has been a head coach for more than thirty years for seven different
8 college basketball programs: Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Memphis,
9 and High Point; and
10 WHEREAS, Tubby Smith has logged an impressive 642-370 overall record,
11 seventeen NCAA tournament appearances, and one National Championship, becoming the
12 thirty-fourth winningest coach in college basketball history; and
13 WHEREAS, he will be remembered for taking five different schools: Tulsa, Georgia,
14 Kentucky, Minnesota, and Texas Tech to the NCAA tournament and for having a winning
15 streak for his first twenty-two years of coaching; and
16 WHEREAS, when asked about his outstanding career, Tubby Smith says, "I feel
17 blessed to have had an amazing career leading, coaching, and teaching great young men at
18 first-class institutions. Working at my alma mater, High Point, during this stage of my career

1 has been a dream."; and
2 WHEREAS, Tubby Smith will be leaving the professional training and development
3 of the athletes in the capable hands of his son and current associate head coach, G.G. Smith,
4 for the 2022-2023 season; and
5 WHEREAS, upon retirement Tubby Smith indicates that he and his wife, Donna, will
6 stay busy by continuing to be an integral part of the growth and prosperity of their alma
7 mater, High Point University.
8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
9 does hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Tubby Smith for a long and distinguished career
10 as an outstanding college head basketball coach.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does
12 hereby extend best wishes to Mr. Tubby Smith on the occasion of his retirement, record for
13 posterity his accomplishments, and extend best wishes for continued success, happiness, and
14 health through his future endeavors.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
16 Mr. Tubby Smith.
