SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 50

COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Louisiana Sweet Potato Advertising and
Development Commission on its 70
th
anniversary.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the Louisiana Sweet Potato Advertising and Development Commission on its
3 seventieth anniversary.
4 WHEREAS, the Legislature of Louisiana has recognized the sweet potato as the
5 official state vegetable; and
6 WHEREAS, the first sweet potato commercial production in the state occurred in
7 Sunset, Louisiana, in 1910; and
8 WHEREAS, according to the Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter's
9 Agricultural Summary, there were over seven thousand one hundred acres of sweet potatoes
10 farmed in the state in 2021 creating a total value of eighty-five million dollars, making it the
11 largest vegetable crop grown in the state; and
12 WHEREAS, the LSU AgCenter Sweet Potato Research Station located in Northeast
13 Louisiana is the only one of its kind in the country devoted solely to sweet potato research
14 including the development of new varieties, which are some of the most popular in the
15 world; and
16 WHEREAS, the Lamb Weston Sweet Potato Processing Plant located in Delhi,
17 Louisiana, is the largest sweet potato french fry plant in America; and
18 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sweet Potato Advertising and Development Commission

1 was created on July 8, 1952, by Act 272 of the 1952 Regular Session making it the oldest
2 agricultural commodity commission in the state; and
3 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sweet Potato Advertising and Development Commission
4 works to expand the market and increase consumption of sweet potatoes grown in Louisiana
5 by acquainting the general public with the health-giving qualities and the food value of sweet
6 potatoes.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
8 does hereby commend the Louisiana Sweet Potato Advertising and Development
9 Commission on its seventieth anniversary.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
11 Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.
