Recognizes Thursday, May 5, 2022, as the thirty-eighth annual Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To recognize Thursday, May 5, 2022, as the thirty-eighth annual Red and White Day at the 3 Louisiana State Capitol. 4 WHEREAS, the celebration of Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature 5 began in 1985 and has grown from a Louisiana tradition to one observed by more than one 6 thousand sorority and fraternity chapters throughout the country; a celebration is held 7 annually at the nation's capital in Washington, D.C.; and 8 WHEREAS, Red and White Day is an activity of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 9 Incorporated, which was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at 10 Howard University who were eager to use their collective strength to promote academic 11 excellence, to provide scholarship funding, to support those in need, to stimulate 12 participation in the establishment of positive public policy, to highlight issues affecting 13 minorities and women, and to find viable solutions to social problems; and 14 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 as a private 15 nonprofit organization; and 16 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is the largest African 17 American Greek letter sorority with more than nine hundred chapters in the United States, 18 England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, the Bahamas, and the Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 96 SLS 22RS-2462 ORIGINAL 1 Republic of Korea represented by a membership of more than two hundred thousand 2 college-educated women; and 3 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated uses a five-point program of 4 economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, 5 physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement to assist the global 6 community; and 7 WHEREAS, represented in the ranks of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated 8 are such notable women as former state senators Diana E. Bajoie, Cheryl Gray Evans, and 9 Karen Carter Peterson, and former state representatives Renee Gill Pratt, Pinkie Carolyn 10 Wilkerson, Rosalind Peychaud, and Jalila Jefferson Bullock, all of whom have left indelible 11 imprints on this state's history; and 12 WHEREAS, on this Red and White Day the sorority honors and celebrates all of the 13 African American female legislators serving the public who make a major impact on their 14 respective communities and the state by championing important issues; and 15 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated 16 on one hundred nine years of service and for its outstanding achievements in the community, 17 the state, and the world. 18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 19 does hereby recognize Thursday, May 5, 2022, as Red and White Day at the Louisiana State 20 Capitol; does hereby commend the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for 21 their exceptional achievements and manifold contributions; and does hereby extend enduring 22 appreciation to the organization and its members for the tremendous honor and pride that 23 they bring to their local communities, the state, and the nation. 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 25 Beverly E. Smith, National President and CEO from 2017-2021 and National First Vice 26 President, Elsie Cooke-Holmes, Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and to 27 Michelle Brown, Regional Director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 28 Incorporated.
