Existing law provides for the ownership and operation of state parks by the office of state
parks, Dept. of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. Specifies that state parks are natural areas
which, when evaluated on a statewide basis, possess outstanding potential for recreation
utilization.
Existing law provides criteria for the designation of property as a state park, including a
minimum size requirement. Provides that the minimum size of a state park is 250 acres and
the preferred minimum size is 400 acres. Authorizes the secretary of the department to
determine which minimum applies in each case. Provides exceptions to the minimum size
requirements.
New law adds an additional exception applicable to a park within a specified area of
Lafourche Parish.
Effective August 1, 2023.
