[R.S. 1:13(B) and 24:177(E)] HB 215 Engrossed 2023 Regular Session Echols Abstract: Requires the office of motor vehicles within the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections to accept credit cards, charge cards, and debit cards for the payment of fees, fines, taxes, penalties, and interest. Present law authorizes the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections to accept credit cards, charge cards, or debit cards for the payment of fees, fines, taxes, penalties, and interest. Proposed law retains present law. Present law authorizes the department to determine which specific programs or offices or locations will accept credit cards, charge cards, or debit cards as payment. Proposed law requires the office of motor vehicles to accept credit cards, charge cards, and debit cards as a method of payment for fees, fines, taxes, penalties, and interest, along with all other payment methods currently used. Otherwise retains present law. Proposed law exempts the office of motor vehicles from accepting credit cards, charge cards, and debit cards for the International Registration Plan authorized in present law (R.S. 47:511(B)). (Amends R.S. 40:1322(D)) Summary of Amendments Adopted by House The Committee Amendments Proposed by House Committee on Appropriations to the original bill: 1. Add that the office of motor vehicles shall accept credit cards, charge cards, and debit cards as a form of payment along with all other payment methods currently used. 2. Add that the office of motor vehicles is not required to accept credit cards, charge cards, and debit cards as a form of payment for the International Registration Plan.
